The short answer

How do I make an NPC for D&D quickly?

Roll one with LoreWeaver’s free NPC generator. A single roll gives you a name, ancestry, trade, look, manner, want, secret, tie to the world and the first thing the NPC says, which is enough to play them for a whole scene. Reroll any line that doesn’t suit your game, then keep the link so the same NPC comes back next session. There’s no sign-up and no AI, so it’s quick enough to use in the middle of a game.

Using a result

Bring them to the table, then keep them coming back.

  1. 01

    At the table

    Open with the first words.

Read the quoted line aloud when the players meet them, then describe the look in a sentence. Play the manner with your voice or your hands, and hold the want and the secret back for later.

  2. 02

    In the scene

Let the want and the secret decide.

The want is what they ask the players for, and the secret is what they will lie to protect. When the players push, ask which of the two is at stake and play the answer. The tie gives you someone else in the world who can turn up next.

  3. 03

    Between sessions

    Keep them the same person.

Save the link or paste the text into your campaign notes, since the link brings the same NPC back line for line. Add a sentence about what the players did to them, and let it shape the next meeting.

  4. 04

    On LoreWeaver

    Play them as a character.

Build this world hands the NPC to LoreWeaver’s world builder, which writes a playable world around them. An AI storyteller gives them a voice while you play your own character, and story memory writes down what happens every few replies, so they remember what you did.

The tables

The lists behind every NPC, with how long each one is.

The tables the NPC generator draws from, with how many entries each holds and the first few
TableEntriesThe first few
First names90Agnes; Pascoe; Hester
Family names60Crane; Kessler; Penhallow
Bynames20the Younger; the Elder; of the Ford
Ancestries11Human; Dwarf; Elf
Trades96Ferry keeper; Rat catcher; Lamplighter
Looks74A burn scar across the back of one hand; Spectacles held together by copper wire; A coat that is more patches than coat
Manners64Answers every question with a question; Talks to strangers like old friends from the first word; Laughs a beat too late at every joke
Wants59To buy back the family boat; To be left alone for one whole day; To see the capital, just once
Secrets58Sank the family boat on purpose; Has been writing letters to a dead sister for ten years; Is wanted under another name two counties over
Ties56Owes the harbor master a month’s wages; Is the mayor’s least favorite cousin; Plays cards every week with the captain of the watch
First words57“If you’re here about the cart, it wasn’t me.”; “You’re late. Or I’m early. Either way, let’s get on with it.”; “Whatever they told you about me is about half true.”

Names, trades, secrets and the rest each come from a separate list, 645 entries in all, so the rat catcher might be the one hiding the true heir to the barony. A name is a first name plus a family name, or now and then a byname. Humans come up more often than any other ancestry, as they do in most settings.

Questions

Questions, answered.

01Is this NPC generator free, and does it use AI?

It’s free to use with no account, and it doesn’t use AI. Every result is put together from table entries we wrote, picked at random when you roll.

02Does it work for D&D 5e?

Yes, and for any other fantasy game. It gives no stat blocks or numbers, only the details you play at the table, so you can pair a result with whatever stats your system uses. The ancestries are the ones most 5e groups already know.

03Can I use these NPCs in my campaign, on a stream or in a published adventure?

Yes. A rolled NPC is yours to use however you like, at your own table, on a stream or in an adventure you publish. Rename them or change any line to fit your world.

04How do I save or share an NPC?

Bookmark or share the link. The address carries the codes for every line, so it brings back exactly this NPC whenever it’s opened. Copying the text into your notes works too.

05Can I reroll one line and keep the rest?

Yes. Roll only the line you want to change, such as the secret or the name, and the rest of the NPC stays exactly as it was.

06How many different NPCs can it make?

The tables combine into 393,324,497,259,724,800 different NPCs. You’ll see a name or a trade more than once, but the same NPC twice is very unlikely.

07Can I play one of these NPCs as a character on LoreWeaver?

Yes. Build this world sends any result to LoreWeaver’s world builder, which makes a playable world around the NPC. The AI storyteller plays them, and you play your own character. The world’s people live on lore cards, which the storyteller reads whenever their names come up, and story memory writes down what happens every few replies, so the NPC remembers what you did. Voice calls let you talk to them out loud, too.
