The short answer
How do I convert a character card from JSON to PNG?
Drop the JSON card on LoreWeaver’s free converter and press Save beside PNG card. The converter writes the card into a PNG as V2 and V3 text chunks, the way SillyTavern does, using the card’s own portrait, or a plain title card with the name when a JSON card has none. The same panel saves JSON V2, JSON V3, and CHARX, all in your browser.

Formats
What each format keeps, and where it fits.
| Format | What’s inside | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| PNG card | The portrait, with the card as a V2 chara chunk and a V3 ccv3 chunk | Sharing, and card sites that show a picture |
| JSON, V2 | Every field and the lorebook as plain text, without a portrait | The widest support across card apps |
| JSON, V3 | The V2 fields plus V3’s additions, such as a nickname and group-only greetings | Apps that read the newest spec |
| CHARX | A zip holding card.json as V3, with the portrait as an embedded asset | RisuAI and other apps that read CHARX |
| V1 card (read only) | The original Tavern fields, kept at the top level | Upgraded to V2 and V3 on the way out |
Cards up to 25 MB. Files follow the V2 and V3 character card specs; PNG cards are written the way SillyTavern writes them.
Step by step
Convert a card in four moves.
- 01
Drop the card
Any format, any spec.
A PNG, JSON, or CHARX card in the V1, V2, or V3 spec. The converter reads it in your browser and shows who it is, with its greetings and lorebook entries counted.
- 02
Pick a format
Press Save beside the one you need.
PNG for sharing, JSON V2 for the widest support, JSON V3 for the newest apps, or CHARX for an archive with the portrait inside.
- 03
Choose a picture
Give a JSON card a face.
A PNG card needs a picture. The converter uses the card’s own portrait, or a plain title card with the name, unless you choose an image of your own.
- 04
Edit or play
Change it, or start a story.
Open the card in the free editor to change any field, or press Play to import it into LoreWeaver and start a story with the character.
Questions
Card formats, explained.
01How do I convert a JSON character card to PNG?
Drop the JSON file on the converter and press Save beside PNG card. A JSON card has no picture, so the PNG gets a plain title card with the character’s name; press Choose a picture first to use your own image. The PNG carries the card as V2 and V3 text, so card apps read it.
02How do I convert a PNG character card to JSON?
Drop the PNG and press Save beside JSON, V2 for the widest support or V3 for the newest apps. The converter reads the card text hidden inside the picture and saves it as a .json file, lorebook included.
03What is the difference between V2 and V3 cards?
V3 keeps every V2 field and adds a few: a nickname, group-only greetings, creation and modification dates, and assets, the extra pictures a card can carry. A V3 PNG stores the card in a ccv3 text chunk. Most apps still read V2, so the converter writes both into every PNG.
04How do I open or convert a CHARX file?
Drop the .charx file on the converter. It reads the card.json inside along with the main portrait, and saves the card as a PNG or JSON file. CHARX files can hold extra pictures, such as expressions; a PNG or JSON card keeps the main portrait only.
05Will I lose anything when I convert a card?
No field is dropped. Fields an app added to the card stay as they came, and the lorebook keeps every entry with its settings. The only things that can’t travel are pictures a CHARX file kept inside itself, other than the main portrait.
06Is my card uploaded anywhere?
No. The card is read and converted in this tab, and the new file is saved straight from your browser. It is uploaded only if you press Play to import it into your own LoreWeaver account.
07Can I convert many cards at once?
The converter takes one card at a time. To bring many characters into LoreWeaver together, the card importer takes up to 50 cards at once, in any of these formats.
