The short answer
How do I open my Character.AI data export?
Drop the zip Character.AI emails you on LoreWeaver’s free export viewer. It reads the download in your browser, lists every character you talked to, and opens each chat in order with search. Save any chat as plain text or as a SillyTavern chat, or import everything into LoreWeaver, where each character becomes a world and each chat a session you can continue. Chats saved with CAI Tools open the same way.

Private by design
Your chats stay on your device.
A Character.AI history can hold years of stories, and the viewer never sends it anywhere. The files are read by code running in this tab, and saving a chat writes the file straight from your browser.
Each chat opens in order, with your messages set apart from the character’s and roleplay actions in italics, the way you wrote them. Search finds a line in a chat of thousands of messages and jumps to it.
Formats
Every chat file the viewer opens.
| File | Where it comes from | What you see |
|---|---|---|
| Character.AI data download (.zip) | Export Data, emailed by Character.AI | Every character and chat it holds, with who wrote each message worked out from the chat’s order |
| CAI Tools chat (.jsonl) | Download Chat in CAI Tools, SillyTavern format | One chat with every message in order and both names |
| CAI Tools history (.zip) | Download History in CAI Tools | Every chat with that character, each in order |
| Oobabooga chat (.json) | CAI Tools, or text-generation-webui | One chat, named after the character in the file name |
| SillyTavern chat (.jsonl) | Any SillyTavern chat file | One chat with both names |
Files up to 400 MB each. Character.AI doesn’t document its download, so the viewer reads it the way LoreWeaver’s importer does. Checked against Character.AI’s help center on October 30, 2026.
Step by step
From Character.AI to a file you keep.
- 01
Ask Character.AI
Start the official export.
On the website, open Profile, Profile Settings, Account, Manage Account & Data, then Export Data. In the app, open Profile, tap the Settings icon, then Legal & Privacy and Export Data. Character.AI says it can take 3 to 4 weeks, and the link it emails works for 7 days.
- 02
Or save chats now
Use CAI Tools for the ones you can’t lose.
The unofficial CAI Tools extension saves one chat, or a character’s whole history, today. Choose the SillyTavern format when it asks.
- 03
Open them here
Drop the files on the panel.
The zip from Character.AI, or the files CAI Tools saved. Several at once is fine: chats with the same character come together under one name.
- 04
Keep them
Save them, or keep playing.
Save one chat or all of them as plain text or SillyTavern chats, or import them into LoreWeaver, where each character becomes a world and each chat a session.
Questions
Character.AI exports, explained.
01How do I export my Character.AI chats?
On the Character.AI website, open Profile, Profile Settings, Account, Manage Account & Data, then Export Data; in the app, open Profile, tap the Settings icon, then Legal & Privacy and Export Data. Character.AI says the export can take 3 to 4 weeks and emails a link that works for 7 days. To save a single chat today, use the unofficial CAI Tools browser extension, then open the file here.
02Is my export uploaded anywhere?
No. The viewer reads your files with code running in this tab, so nothing reaches LoreWeaver while you read, search, or save. Chats are uploaded only if you choose to import them into your own LoreWeaver account.
03How do I convert Character.AI chats to SillyTavern?
Open your export here, choose SillyTavern under Save as, and save one chat or all of them. Each chat becomes a .jsonl file with both names and every message in order, which SillyTavern’s Import Chat reads.
04Can I save my Character.AI chats as text?
Yes. Choose Text under Save as. Each chat saves as a .txt file that opens anywhere, with the character’s name and yours above each message, and Save all puts every chat in one zip, a folder per character.
05Can I keep playing my Character.AI chats somewhere else?
Yes. Press Keep playing on LoreWeaver and make a free account. Each character becomes a world with its own memory, and each chat a session you can continue from its last message. Importing is free on every plan.
06What is in Character.AI’s data download?
Character.AI doesn’t document it. The downloads seen so far hold messages and characters but don’t say who sent each message, so the viewer reads each chat the way Character.AI writes one: the character’s greeting first, then you and the character in turn. Some downloads arrive without chats; CAI Tools can save those directly.
07Why does a chat say who wrote each message was worked out?
Because the file didn’t say. It happens with Character.AI’s own download, which lists messages without their sender. Glance at the first few messages of a chat: if the turns look swapped, the chat started with your message rather than the greeting.
08Is Character.AI shutting down?
Character.AI filed for Chapter 11 on October 12, 2026 for a court-supervised sale and says the app stays up for now, with the sale expected by the end of November or perhaps early December 2026. Our explainer follows each court date. Export your chats now either way.
