The short answer

How do I make a lorebook for SillyTavern?

Open LoreWeaver’s free lorebook editor and start a new lorebook, or open one you have. Add an entry for each person, place, or thing, give it the keys that should bring it in, and write its content as plain facts. Paste a passage into the test box to check which entries it triggers, then save the book as a SillyTavern World Info file, or as a character book to put inside a card.

Settings

Each setting, in plain words.

Lorebook entry settings and what each one does
SettingWhat it does
KeysAn entry comes in when any of its keys appears in the recent chat. A key written as /pattern/ is a regular expression.
Secondary keysNarrow an entry further: it needs any, all, none, or not all of them as well.
Always onThe entry is in every prompt, whatever the keys.
OrderWhere the entry sits among the others: higher numbers come later in the prompt.
PlacementBefore or after the character, around the author’s note, around the example messages, or at a depth in the chat.
Trigger chanceThe chance, out of 100, that a matched entry is used.
Match case, whole wordsStricter matching for one entry: exact capitals, or whole words only for one-word keys.

Step by step

A working lorebook in four moves.

  1. 01

    Open or start

Bring a lorebook, or begin a new one.

Drop a World Info file, a NovelAI, RisuAI, or Agnai lorebook, story cards, or a character card, and every entry opens. Or start an empty book.

  2. 02

    Write the entries

One entry for each thing worth remembering.

Give each entry a title, the keys that bring it in, and its content as plain facts. Each content box shows about how many tokens it takes.

  3. 03

    Test a passage

See what a scene would bring in.

Paste a few lines of story into the test box. The editor lists the entries it would bring in and the key that matched, using SillyTavern’s default rules.

  4. 04

    Save it

As World Info, or inside a card.

Save a World Info file for SillyTavern and other apps, save a character book, or put the lorebook straight into a new character card.

Questions

Lorebooks, explained.

01What is a lorebook?

A list of entries about a story’s people, places, and things, each with keys. When a key comes up in the chat, the entry is added to what the AI reads, so it remembers details without carrying all of them all the time. SillyTavern calls it World Info.

02How do I make a lorebook for SillyTavern?

Press Start a new lorebook on this page and add an entry for each person, place, or thing, with its keys and content. Test a passage to check the keys, then press Save World Info and import the .json file in SillyTavern’s World Info panel.

03How do I convert a NovelAI lorebook to SillyTavern?

Drop the .lorebook file (or a NovelAI PNG lorebook) on the editor, check the entries, and press Save World Info. Titles, keys, content, and which entries are always on come across; NovelAI’s own context settings don’t have a SillyTavern equivalent.

04How do I get the lorebook out of a character card?

Drop the card, a PNG, JSON, or CHARX file, on the editor. Its lorebook opens with every entry, and you can save it as a World Info file to use with other characters, or as a character book.

05How do I add a lorebook to a character card?

Open the lorebook here and press Put it in a character card, which starts a new card in the free card editor with the lorebook inside. To add it to a card you already have, open that card in the card editor and add entries from the lorebook file.

06How do lorebook keys work?

By default SillyTavern looks for each key anywhere in the recent chat, ignoring capitals, so “ford” also matches “Fordham”. Turn on Whole words only to avoid that, use secondary keys to require more context, and use /pattern/ keys for regular expressions.

07Is my lorebook uploaded anywhere?

No. The editor reads and saves files in this tab, and keeps your open book in this browser so a reload doesn’t lose it. Nothing reaches LoreWeaver unless you import the file into a world yourself.

08Can I use my lorebook on LoreWeaver?

Yes. LoreWeaver imports World Info into any world as lore cards, which the storyteller reads when their names or tags come up. As you play, Lorekeeper suggests new lore cards from the story, and the LoreMap shows how they connect. Free to start.
