Character.AI’s bankruptcy, in plain terms.
On October 12, 2026, Character.AI started a Chapter 11 case to sell the company under a court’s supervision. Disney opened the bidding at $20 million for a license to some of its technology. That bid doesn’t include the app or your chats, and other buyers can still outbid it.
The app is still running, and Character.AI says subscriptions and billing are unchanged for now. It expects the sale to finish by the end of November or early December, and says the platform will be wound down if no bid arrives that keeps it running.
If you want your chats, ask for your data now. Character.AI says an export takes 3 to 4 weeks, and its download link lasts 7 days.

Not for fiction between adults. Every account is 18+, and mature themes, sexual content between adults included, are allowed. A short list of hard limits, such as anything sexual involving minors, applies everywhere; the community guidelines spell them out.
