A long marble hall lined with open doorways, each opening onto a different world: snowy peaks, a neon city, a haunted wood, deep space, and a sunlit coast
Ten doors, ten ways to tell a story. Each review below says who should walk through it.

The short answer

What is the best AI roleplay site?

It depends on the story you want. For long stories with memory, choose LoreWeaver: it keeps memories, a running recap, and lore cards as a story grows, and you can play 20 replies before making an account. Character.AI is the most popular place to chat with ready-made characters, Janitor AI offers free community bots that allow mature roleplay, and SillyTavern gives total control, local models included. AI Dungeon remains the classic for text adventures, and NovelAI suits writers who want private, co-written prose.

01

LoreWeaver: Best for long stories with memory and worlds

Free option
20 replies with no account, then a free plan
Memory
Memories, recaps, lore cards; up to 100K tokens
Mature content
Allowed between adults, within hard limits
Cards
Imports Tavern cards and lorebooks
Runs on
Any browser, phone to desktop

LoreWeaver is a storytelling app for roleplay that runs for weeks or months. The storyteller plays out each reply as a scene and keeps the story straight with memories it records as you play, a running recap of the story, and lore cards for the people, places, and factions in your world.

Where it wins
Continuity. Lore cards enter a reply when their name or tags come up, and the Loom fires story events when their conditions are met. It imports Tavern character cards (PNG, JSON, and CHARX), SillyTavern World Info, NovelAI lorebooks, and AI Dungeon story cards. Dark themes and adult romance are welcome, within hard limits set out in the community guidelines.
Where it falls short
Its community library is younger and smaller than Character.AI’s or Chub’s. It runs in the browser rather than as a store app, and you can’t connect your own model or API key.
Price
Free to start: 20 replies with no account, then a free plan with unlimited replies from the free storyteller and 25 premium replies a day. Paid plans run from $7.99 to $49.99 a month, and the largest keeps 100,000 tokens of story in view.
Pick it if
you want characters who still remember what you did a hundred replies ago. See how the memory works.
02

Character.AI: Best for ready-made characters, polished apps

Free option
Free with ads
Memory
Story Memory and pins; Facts and more pins on c.ai+
Mature content
Filtered; open-ended chat is 18+
Cards
No import or export
Runs on
Web, iOS, Android

Character.AI is the biggest name in AI character chat, with millions of community-made characters and smooth apps for the web, iPhone, and Android. Conversations are quick and chat-like, and you can also talk with characters by voice. Since November 2025, open-ended chat has been for users 18 and over, confirmed with age assurance.

Where it wins
Range and ease. Whatever character you have in mind, someone has probably made one, and the apps make the first conversation effortless.
Where it falls short
Explicit content is filtered for everyone, memory rests on Story Memory notes and pinned messages unless you pay for c.ai+, which adds automatic Facts, and characters can’t be exported or imported as cards.
Price
Free with ads. In the US, (c.ai) lite costs $4.99 a month for extra memory pins and fewer ads, and c.ai+ costs $9.99 a month with the full memory suite.
Pick it if
you want to talk with a favorite character in a few taps. Want that character in a longer story? See the Character.AI alternative.
03

Janitor AI: Best for free community bots

Free option
Unlimited chat on its own model
Memory
About 9K tokens free; 5× on janitor+
Mature content
Allowed for adults; stricter in the apps
Cards
Imports Tavern cards; no export
Runs on
Web, iOS, Android

Janitor AI has more than 15 million users and a huge library of community-made bots, many written for mature roleplay, and chatting with its own model is free and unlimited. After years in the browser, it released iPhone and Android apps in February 2026. It is for adults: the app is rated 18+, and people in the UK, Australia, and Brazil must verify their age.

Where it wins
Price and range. The free tier is generous, creators can add scripts that react as a chat unfolds, and you can connect your own API key to use other models.
Where it falls short
Its free model keeps roughly 9,000 tokens in view, so long chats lose early details unless you write memories yourself. You can import a Tavern card when you create a bot, but there is no built-in way to export one, and the apps filter more than the website until you change your content settings on the web.
Price
Free. Its first subscription, janitor+, costs $12.99 a month for five times the context, priority replies, and a monthly allowance of swipes on stronger models.
Pick it if
you want a huge free catalog of bots and don’t mind tending the memory by hand. See the Janitor AI alternative.
04

SillyTavern: Best for total control and local models

Free option
Free software; you supply the model
Memory
World Info, summaries, vector storage
Mature content
No filter of its own; model rules apply
Cards
Imports and exports PNG and JSON cards
Runs on
Windows, macOS, Linux; Android via Termux (unofficial)

SillyTavern is a free, open-source interface you install on a computer, or unofficially on an Android phone through Termux. It has no storyteller of its own: you connect a cloud model with an API key, or a model running on your own hardware. Version 1.19 arrived in September 2026.

Where it wins
Control. You choose the model, the prompts, and every generation setting, and extensions add summaries, vector storage, image generation, and text-to-speech. It imports cards as PNG, JSON, CHARX, and more, and its World Info lorebooks add lore when keywords appear. It adds no content filter of its own, so the rules are your model provider’s.
Where it falls short
Setup takes time and some technical comfort, the quality and cost of every reply depend on the model you connect, and your chats live wherever you installed it.
Price
The software is free under the AGPL-3.0 license. Any cost comes from your model provider, or from your own hardware if you run models locally.
Pick it if
you like to tinker and want nothing between you and the model. Rather skip the setup? See the SillyTavern alternative.
05

Chub: Best for finding and sharing character cards

Free option
Free with your own API key
Memory
Lorebooks; context set by the model
Mature content
Uncensored, by its own description
Cards
Downloads as PNG or JSON
Runs on
Browser

Chub (chub.ai, also known as CharHub) is one of the largest public libraries of character cards and lorebooks, with its own chat interface on top. Its cards download as PNG or JSON files that open in SillyTavern, LoreWeaver, and most other Tavern-compatible apps.

Where it wins
Discovery and portability. The catalog is huge and tagged, any public card can travel with you, and you can chat through whichever API you prefer. Chub’s own guide calls the site uncensored.
Where it falls short
Chatting well takes your own API key or a subscription, long chats depend on the context of the model you connect, and community cards vary widely in quality.
Price
Browsing and downloading cards cost nothing. Chub’s own models come with its Mars subscription, which its guide lists at $20 a month for unlimited messages.
Pick it if
you want to find a character quickly and take it anywhere. See the Chub alternative.
06

SpicyChat: Best for adult chat with memory tools

Free option
Free with ads, 4K context
Memory
Memory Manager; Semantic Memory on upper tiers
Mature content
Allowed for adults; age checks in some regions
Cards
Imports PNG or JSON cards
Runs on
Web, Android app

SpicyChat is a large character chat site for adults, built around NSFW roleplay with community-made bots. It runs in the browser and offers an official Android app as a download from its own website; Apple removed its iPhone app in 2025. In some places, including the UK, France, Italy, Australia, and a number of US states, you must verify your age to see NSFW content.

Where it wins
Memory tools. Paid tiers include a Memory Manager for adding, editing, and pinning memories, and True Supporter and up add Semantic Memory, which condenses past messages into short memories automatically. Lorebooks, group chats, and Tavern card imports (PNG or JSON) round it out.
Where it falls short
The free tier shows ads and keeps about 4,000 tokens of context, and prices for new subscribers rose on September 8, 2026.
Price
Get A Taste costs $5.95 a month, True Supporter $19.95, and I’m All In $29.95, which raises context to as much as 32,768 tokens on supported models.
Pick it if
adult roleplay is the point and you want bots that keep notes. See how LoreWeaver handles mature stories.
07

AI Dungeon: Best for classic text adventures

Free option
Free to play, 4K context
Memory
Auto summaries, memory bank, story cards
Mature content
Opt-in Mature setting for 18+
Cards
Story cards as JSON
Runs on
Web, iOS, Android

AI Dungeon, from Latitude, has been running AI text adventures since 2019. You type what you do or say, the AI narrates what happens next, and a large catalog of community scenarios gives you places to begin. It plays on the web, iPhone, and Android.

Where it wins
Adventure play with memory built in. Its memory system summarizes your adventure as you go and recalls relevant moments, and story cards bring in characters and places by keyword. The Mature setting, which asks you to confirm you are 18 or older, stops limiting mature, violent, or triggering content (a filter still blocks sexual content involving minors), and private single-player stories are never moderated.
Where it falls short
The free tier keeps up to 4K tokens of context, and bigger windows sit on pricier plans: up to 16K tokens on Legend, 32K on Mythic, up to 64K on Ultimate with some models, and 128K on its premium Shadow tiers.
Price
Free to play. Memberships cost $14.99, $29.99, $49.99, or $99.99 a month and add models, context, memory slots, and monthly credits.
Pick it if
you want a game where every turn is a move. Compare AI Dungeon and LoreWeaver.
08

NovelAI: Best for co-writing prose in private

Free option
Trial of 50 text generations
Memory
Memory, Author’s Note, lorebook
Mature content
Adults only; stories encrypted
Cards
Lorebooks as files or PNG
Runs on
Browser, installable as a web app

NovelAI, from Anlatan, is a writing tool first: you and the AI build a story together in a document-style editor, with a text adventure mode and an image generator alongside. Stories are encrypted in your browser before they are stored, so only you can read them, and accounts are for adults 18 and over.

Where it wins
Privacy and fine control over prose. Memory, Author’s Note, and a keyword-driven lorebook steer the story, and lorebooks can be shared as files or embedded in PNG images.
Where it falls short
It is built for writing more than for character chat, so roleplay takes more setup. It runs only in the browser, though it installs as a web app, and the free trial is brief.
Price
The trial includes 50 text generations. Tablet costs $10 a month, Scroll $15, and Opus $25, which has the largest context (up to 28,672 tokens) and includes image generation within limits.
Pick it if
you write fiction and want an AI co-author that keeps your drafts private. See the NovelAI alternative.
09

Perchance: Best for free chat with no account

Free option
Free and unlimited, no sign-up
Memory
Optional long-term memory, lorebooks
Mature content
Adults only, by its terms
Cards
Imports Tavern cards
Runs on
Browser; chats stay on your device

Perchance’s AI Character Chat is a free page on perchance.org, a site of community-made generators. There is no sign-up and no message cap, and your characters and chats are saved in your own browser rather than in an account.

Where it wins
No friction and no cost. You can import Tavern character cards, attach lorebooks, and switch on an optional long-term memory that saves and recalls past details, on top of summaries of older messages that are on by default. Characters can be shared as links, and your data exports as a file.
Where it falls short
Everything lives in one browser, so nothing syncs between devices, and clearing site data can erase your chats unless you export them first.
Price
Free. Perchance’s terms say its services are for adults 18 and over.
Pick it if
you want to try AI roleplay this minute without handing over an email address. More ways to play free.
10

Chai: Best for quick chats on your phone

Free option
Ad-supported; paid-only in some regions
Memory
Not publicly documented
Mature content
18+ app; refuses explicit sexual content
Cards
Made and kept in the app
Runs on
iOS, Android

Chai is an iPhone and Android app where you swipe through community-made characters and chat in short, fast messages. Chai Research describes it as an 18+ service and reports more than a million daily users.

Where it wins
Speed and convenience. Characters are a tap away, conversations feel like texting, and optional safety filters can hide mature content and block specific characters.
Where it falls short
It is app-only, characters are made and kept inside the app, and Chai doesn’t publish how much of a conversation its characters remember. In some regions, the app requires a paid subscription.
Price
Where a free tier is offered, it is supported by ads. Premium and Ultra subscriptions are sold in the app, and the US App Store lists them at up to $13.99 and $29.99.
Pick it if
you want light character chats on your phone between other things. Compare Chai and LoreWeaver.

Method

How we compared the AI roleplay sites.

01

The shortlist

The ones players ask about.

We picked AI roleplay and story sites by popularity and by how often they come up in players’ questions, covering character chat, community bots, open-source frontends, text adventures, and co-writing tools. Companion apps built around one ongoing relationship, such as Kindroid, are not included.

02

The sources

Official pages first.

Prices, limits, and rules come from each site’s own pricing pages, help centers, terms, and app store listings, checked on October 3, 2026, and every review lists its sources. Where an official page is silent, we cite the clearest independent source, or say the site doesn’t publish it rather than guess.

03

The questions

The same ones for every site.

Who it suits best, what you get free, how memory works, what content is allowed, whether character cards come and go, and which devices it runs on.

04

The disclosure

We make LoreWeaver.

LoreWeaver is listed first because it is ours, not because it wins every category. We’ve tried to be fair, and each review says where that site falls short, ours included.

Questions

Choosing an AI roleplay site, answered.

01What is the best free AI roleplay site?

For no cost and no account at all, Perchance’s AI Character Chat is the simplest start. Janitor AI is free and unlimited on its own model, and LoreWeaver gives you 20 replies with no account, then a free plan with unlimited replies from the free storyteller and 25 premium replies a day.

02Which AI roleplay site remembers the most?

Among hosted sites, LoreWeaver keeps up to 100,000 tokens in view on its top plan, more than any standard plan we found; only AI Dungeon’s premium Shadow tiers document more, up to 128K tokens on some models. LoreWeaver adds automatic memories, a running recap, and lore cards. SillyTavern can hold more if you connect a long-context model yourself, and AI Dungeon and SpicyChat (on its upper tiers) also turn past messages into memories automatically.

03Is there an AI roleplay site with no filter?

Few are fully unfiltered. SillyTavern adds no filter of its own, Chub calls itself uncensored, and AI Dungeon’s Mature setting lifts its limits on mature and violent content, keeping only a filter on sexual content involving minors, with private single-player stories never moderated. Janitor AI, SpicyChat, and LoreWeaver allow adult roleplay within hard limits, while Character.AI filters explicit content for everyone.

04Which sites support SillyTavern character cards?

SillyTavern, Chub, Janitor AI, SpicyChat, Perchance, and LoreWeaver all read Tavern character cards in PNG or JSON. LoreWeaver also opens CHARX files and imports SillyTavern World Info, NovelAI lorebooks, and AI Dungeon story cards, while Character.AI has no card import and Janitor AI can’t export its bots.

05Is Character.AI still good for roleplay in 2026?

Yes, for quick conversations with an enormous range of characters on polished apps. Explicit content stays filtered, open-ended chat has been adults-only since November 2025, and memory relies on Story Memory notes and pinned messages, with automatic Facts and a new Lorebook reaching c.ai+ subscribers first, so long or mature stories usually fit better elsewhere.

06Which AI roleplay sites have phone apps?

Character.AI, Janitor AI, AI Dungeon, and Chai have apps for iPhone and Android, and SpicyChat offers an Android app from its own website. LoreWeaver, NovelAI, and Perchance run in your phone’s browser with nothing to install.

07Which AI roleplay site is the most private?

SillyTavern and Perchance store chats on your own device, and NovelAI encrypts stories in your browser so only you can read them. On LoreWeaver, stories stay private unless you choose to publish them.
