Open a card to edit
A PNG, JSON, or CHARX card from SillyTavern, Chub, RisuAI, or any app that uses the Tavern format.
Read in your browser. Nothing is uploaded unless you play it.
The short answer
How do I make a character card for SillyTavern?
Open LoreWeaver’s free character card editor, start a blank card or open one you have, and fill in the name, description, personality, scenario, first message, and any alternate greetings, example dialogue, and lorebook entries. Then choose PNG, JSON, or CHARX and save. A PNG card carries the character as V2 and V3 text inside the picture, the way SillyTavern writes cards, so SillyTavern, Chub, RisuAI, and other Tavern apps open it.

Field guide
What each field does, and who reads it.
| Field | What it’s for | Read by |
|---|---|---|
| Name | What the character is called. Apps put it wherever {{char}} appears. | Everyone |
| Description | Appearance, history, and what they want, in plain sentences. | The model, with every reply |
| Personality | A short summary of temperament. Many writers fold it into the description. | The model |
| Scenario | Where the story starts and what is going on. | The model |
| First message | The opening of every new chat, written in the character’s voice. | The player and the model |
| Alternate greetings | Other openings a player can choose instead. | The player and the model |
| Example dialogue | Short sample exchanges that show how the character talks. | The model |
| System prompt | Standing instructions that replace or add to the app’s own. | The model, when the app allows it |
| Post-history instructions | Directions read after the chat, just before each reply. | The model |
| Character’s note | A SillyTavern note placed a few messages from the end of the chat. | The model, in SillyTavern |
| Creator notes | How to play the card and what to expect. | People reading the card |
| Tags | Words that help people find the card on sites that list cards. | People browsing |
| Lorebook | Entries brought in when their keys come up in the chat. | The model, when a key appears |
Fields follow the V2 and V3 character card specs. The Character’s note is SillyTavern’s, kept in the card’s extensions.
Step by step
A finished card in four moves.
- 01
Open or start
Bring a card, or begin with a blank one.
Drop a PNG, JSON, or CHARX card on the panel, and every field loads, its lorebook included. Or start a blank card. Either way, nothing leaves your browser.
- 02
Write the character
Fill in who they are and how they open.
Each field shows its length in characters and about how many tokens it takes, so you can see what a long description costs the story.
- 03
Add a lorebook
Give places and people their own entries.
Each entry has the keys that bring it in. Paste a passage into the test box to see which entries it would wake before you save.
- 04
Save or play
Pick a format, or start a story.
Choose PNG, JSON V2, JSON V3, or CHARX and save. Or press Play to import the character into LoreWeaver free and start playing.
Questions
Character cards, written and saved.
01How do I create a character card?
Press Start a blank card on this page, give the character a name, and write the description and first message; everything else is optional. Add alternate greetings, example dialogue, and lorebook entries if you want them, then choose a format and press Save card. The editor works in your browser, with no account.
02Which format should I save my card in?
PNG for sharing: the picture carries the card inside it as V2 and V3 text, so card sites and apps read either. JSON V2 for a plain text copy that nearly every app reads. JSON V3 for apps that support the newest spec. CHARX for an archive with the portrait inside, as RisuAI uses.
03Can I edit a character card PNG?
Yes. Open the PNG here and every field loads, its lorebook included. When you save, the editor writes a new PNG with the same picture and fresh card text, replacing the text the old file carried.
04Does the editor keep settings it doesn’t show?
Yes. Fields an app added to the card, such as SillyTavern’s extensions, stay exactly as they came, and lorebook entries keep settings like groups and timed effects. Only the fields you change are rewritten.
05Is my card uploaded anywhere?
No. The card is read and written in this tab, and your draft is kept in this browser so a reload doesn’t lose it. The card is uploaded only if you press Play to import it into your own LoreWeaver account.
06What do {{char}} and {{user}} mean?
They’re placeholders. Apps replace {{char}} with the character’s name and {{user}} with the player’s when the story runs, so a card can say “{{user}} steps into the shop” without knowing who will play it.
07How long should a character card be?
Most apps send the description, personality, scenario, and example dialogue with every reply, so each token there takes room from the story. Keep those fields to what changes how the character acts, and move background facts into lorebook entries, which come in only when their keys appear.
08Can I play my card without SillyTavern?
Yes. Press Play on this page to import the card into LoreWeaver, with nothing to install. It becomes a character world with memory, its greetings become openings to choose from, and its lorebook becomes lore cards. Importing is free on every plan.
