We make LoreWeaver, a third app, and mention it once near the end. Every fact about Character.AI and Janitor AI links to a source below, nearly all of them the companies’ own pages.

The short answer

Which is better, Character.AI or Janitor AI?

Character.AI is better for quick, polished conversations: more than 10 million characters, voice calls, and apps for web, iPhone, and Android, with explicit content filtered for everyone. Janitor AI is better for adults who want mature roleplay, Tavern card imports, and a choice of models, though its free model keeps only about 8,000 to 9,000 tokens in view and you write its Chat Memory yourself. On both free tiers, long-term memory is mostly notes you write or pin.

Questions

Character.AI or Janitor AI, answered.

01Is Character.AI or Janitor AI better for roleplay?

For roleplay that stays clear of explicit content, Character.AI: its characters are easy to find, and you can talk to them by voice. For adult roleplay, Janitor AI, since Character.AI filters explicit content for everyone. Janitor AI also suits people who bring Tavern cards or want to choose their model.

02Does Character.AI allow NSFW content?

No. Its community guidelines prohibit pornographic content and nudity for every user, adults included. Since late November 2025, open-ended chat has also been limited to users 18 and over, with younger users offered Stories and other creative formats.

03Is Janitor AI free?

Yes. Chatting with its own model, JanitorLLM, is free and unlimited. janitor+ costs $12.99 a month for five times the context, priority replies, and monthly swipes with stronger models, and an outside API key or janitor+ Router bills you per use.

04Which one remembers more?

It depends on the plan. Character.AI doesn’t publish a context size; its memory rests on Story Memory you write and pinned messages, with automatic Facts on c.ai+. Janitor AI’s free model keeps about 8,000 to 9,000 tokens in view, shared with the bot’s definition and your Chat Memory, and janitor+ multiplies that by five.

05Can I move a character from Character.AI to Janitor AI?

Not directly. Character.AI has no export, so copy the character’s description, greeting, and example lines by hand into Janitor AI’s create-character form. Janitor AI imports Tavern cards but can’t export bots, so keep your own copy of anything you write there.

06Do both have phone apps?

Yes. Character.AI has iPhone and Android apps that show ads on the free tier. Janitor AI released its iPhone and Android apps in February 2026; they start with NSFW content switched off until you enable it on the website.

07Are they for adults only?

Janitor AI is for adults only, with one-time age verification in Australia, Brazil, and the UK. Character.AI limits open-ended chat to users 18 and over, confirmed with age assurance, and offers younger users Stories and other creative formats instead.

08Is there an option built for longer stories?

If your chats run for weeks, an app built around memory may suit you better. LoreWeaver, which publishes this comparison, saves memories every few replies and recalls lore cards by name, and you can try any Hub world as a guest for 20 replies.
