The short answer

Is Character.AI or Talkie better?

Character.AI is better for memory and voice: everyone gets Story Memory and pinned messages, c.ai+ ($9.99 a month) saves Facts automatically, and its apps have live voice calls. Talkie is better if you enjoy collecting cards and building characters, with pictures the AI draws and a voice you customize, though its own FAQ says older conversations get forgotten. Character.AI’s catch is its Chapter 11 case, filed October 12, 2026: the app works normally for now, but it will be wound down if no buyer keeps it running. For long stories with memory, and room for mature fiction between adults, LoreWeaver is the pick.

01Is Character.AI shutting down?

Not yet. Character.AI filed for Chapter 11 on October 12, 2026 to sell the company under court supervision, and says the app remains up, subscriptions stay active, and billing is unchanged for now. It expects the sale to finish by the end of November or early December 2026, and the platform will be wound down if no bid keeps it running. Disney’s $20 million opening bid is for a license to some of its technology; the app and your chats aren’t part of it.

02Which one remembers more, Character.AI or Talkie?

Character.AI documents more memory tools: Story Memory and pinned messages for everyone, plus Facts on c.ai+, which saves details about your persona, the character, and side characters automatically. Talkie’s FAQ says older conversations can be forgotten because AI memory is limited, and that it is working on improvements. LoreWeaver writes memories every 4 replies on every plan and brings back the ones that fit each scene.

03Can I export my chats from Character.AI or Talkie?

From Character.AI, yes: request a data export on the website (Profile, Profile Settings, Account, Manage Account & Data, Export Data) or in the app (Profile, Settings, Legal & Privacy, Export Data). It can take 3 to 4 weeks and the link lasts 7 days, so ask early. Talkie’s export page lists your email, username, gender, and age, and deleting a Talkie account erases every conversation. LoreWeaver imports Character.AI’s download with every message in order.

04Do Character.AI and Talkie allow NSFW content?

No. Character.AI’s guidelines prohibit pornographic content and nudity, and Talkie’s community guidelines ban explicit sexual content and even suggestive undertones. LoreWeaver accounts are 18+, and mature fiction between adults is allowed within published hard limits.

05How old do you have to be to use Character.AI or Talkie?

Talkie’s terms set the minimum age at 14, or older where local law requires it. Character.AI has limited open-ended chat to users 18 and over since late November 2025, and its App Store listing is rated 18+. LoreWeaver accounts are for adults 18 and over.

06Is Talkie free?

Yes. You can start chatting on Talkie’s website without downloading anything or paying, and Talkie+ is a paid upgrade. Character.AI is free too, with ads, and messaging is unlimited on every plan; (c.ai) lite costs $4.99 and c.ai+ $9.99 a month in the US.
