LoreWeaver is a storytelling app where a storyteller runs the world and you act in it. You type what you do or say, the storyteller answers with the next scene, and the story keeps its own memory as it grows.

Where it wins
Worlds and memory. Describe a world in one sentence and the world builder makes its places, people, a painted cover, and an opening scene, or start from thousands of community worlds on the Hub. Every 4 replies the storyteller writes memories it recalls by meaning, wording, and who is in the scene, beside a running recap you can edit, pin, and add to. Loom templates add quests, inventory, health, and dice checks, branches let you go back to any reply and take the other path, with a tree view of every branch, and AI Dungeon adventures import with their story cards.
Where it falls short
Its library of community worlds is younger than AI Dungeon’s.
Price
Play 20 replies in any Hub world with no account, then keep going on a free plan with unlimited replies from the free storyteller (about 5 to 7 seconds for a typical reply) and 25 premium replies a day. Paid plans run from $7.99 to $49.99 a month, and scene pictures start on Pro.

you want an adventure that still remembers its first chapter many sessions later. Start an AI text adventure.

Memory
Summaries, Memory Bank, story cards
Price
Free; $14.99 to $99.99 a month

AI Dungeon, from Latitude, is a free AI text adventure game where players create open-ended stories. You type what you do or say, the AI narrates what happens, and thousands of community scenarios give you places to begin.

Where it wins
Do, Say, and Story turns cover action, speech, and narration, See makes a picture, and you can play together with friends in multiplayer. Its memory summarizes the story every 15 actions and keeps a Memory Bank of key moments, and story cards bring characters and places in by keyword.
Where it falls short
The free tier keeps up to 4K tokens of context and 25 memories, and bigger windows cost more: its membership page lists 8K on Journey, 16K on Legend, and 32K on Mythic and Ultimate, with more on some models.
Price
Free to play. Journey costs $14.99 a month, Legend $29.99, Mythic $49.99, and Ultimate $99.99.
Pick it if
you want the original style of AI adventure, with thousands of community scenarios to choose from. Compare AI Dungeon and LoreWeaver.
03

NovelAI: Best for command-style play, kept private

How you play
Do and say inputs, plus classic commands
Make your own
Start from a scenario or a blank prompt
Memory
Lorebook entries triggered by keywords
Price
Trial; $10 to $25 a month
Runs on
Browser, installable as a web app

NovelAI is a story generator with a Text Adventure mode that has its own interface. Do mode turns your input into an action and Say mode into speech, and short commands such as l, i, and x look around, check your inventory, and examine things.

Where it wins
Classic commands and privacy. Stories are encrypted in your browser before they’re stored, so NovelAI can’t read them, and lorebook entries bring places and people back when their keys appear. Scenarios tagged Text Adventure give you somewhere to start.
Where it falls short
Its docs note that the AI writes more coherently when it has more to start from, and the free trial is 50 text generations, given once.
Price
Tablet costs $10 a month, Scroll $15, and Opus $25, which keeps the most context, up to 28,672 tokens.
Pick it if
you like classic command-style adventures and want your stories kept private. See the NovelAI alternative.
04

Infinite Worlds: Best for player-made worlds with pictures

How you play
Type actions in player-made worlds
Make your own
A World Generator builds one from a prompt
Memory
Short- and long-term memory, a Summary AI
Price
Daily free turns, then credits
Runs on
Browser

Infinite Worlds, from the solo studio Friendly Fox Games, launched in browsers in February 2024. You pick a world another player made or generate your own, type what you do, and pay for each turn in credits once your daily free turns run out.

Where it wins
Ready-made and generated worlds. Authors can give a world tracked items, keyword instruction blocks, and evaluation instructions that judge each action, and a Summary AI (currently Kimi K2.5) condenses past turns and keeps character notes current. Pictures typically cost 3 to 5 credits each, and worlds can earn their authors bonus credits.
Where it falls short
The cost changes from turn to turn. Its wiki calls the per-turn prices in the model menu estimates, because each turn is priced by how much text goes in and comes out.
Price
Daily free turns on the model you choose, then credits for each turn. Creating a world and making pictures cost credits too.
Pick it if
you like trying worlds other people built, with pictures along the way. See the Infinite Worlds alternative.
05

Perchance: Best for quick one-off adventures

How you play
Type actions to an AI game master
Make your own
Set the style, tone, difficulty, and rules
Memory
Varies; some remixes add lorebooks
Price
Free, unlimited, no sign-up
Runs on
Browser

Perchance is a site of free, community-made generators, and several of them are AI text adventures. Its AI RPG page is free, unlimited, and needs no sign-up, and its AI Text Adventure page lets you set the writing style, tone, difficulty, pacing, and world rules before you start.

Where it wins
No account, no cost, and plenty of variety. You can publish an adventure to a shared library from the AI Text Adventure page, and remixes add more structure: Emberfall uses stats, dice checks, loot, and leveling, and Enhanced RPG adds a lorebook with trigger words and story branches.
Where it falls short
Each generator is made by a different person, so features differ from one page to the next.
Price
Free. Perchance’s terms say its services are for adults 18 and over.
Pick it if
you want to start an adventure in the next minute with no sign-up. See the Perchance alternative.
06

AI Roguelite: Best for a text roguelite on your PC

How you play
Type actions; combat rolls dice against your stats
Make your own
The AI makes every place, NPC, and item
Memory
Steam Cloud saves
Price
$14.99 on Steam
Runs on
Windows

AI Roguelite, by Max Loh, is a text RPG on Steam in which an AI generates every location, NPC, enemy, item, crafting recipe, and game mechanic. It left Early Access in October 2023.

Where it wins
Game systems. Combat depends on what you try, how plausible it is, and dice rolls against your stats and skills; items craft from whatever you combine; every entity gets an AI-made image; and you can travel with up to four party members. A free cloud model works out of the box, and you can also connect OpenRouter, LM Studio, or a model on your own GPU.
Where it falls short
It runs only on Windows, and it costs money up front.
Price
$14.99 on Steam, with an optional monthly subscription for pricier AI models and image generation.
Pick it if
you want an AI adventure that plays like a roguelike video game on your PC. See LoreWeaver’s AI RPG.

AI Realm: Best for d&D-style campaigns

How you play
Play a 5e character with an AI game master
Make your own
GM Guides and NPC Cards
Memory
Notes; a summary about every 8 messages
Price
Free plan; four paid tiers
Runs on
Browser; installs on phones

AI Realm runs D&D-style campaigns built on 5e SRD (2014) content. You make a character with a race, class, background, and abilities, and an AI game master takes it from there.

Where it wins
Character sheets. Click a stat, skill, save, or attack to roll dice, and the AI keeps HP, level, gold, XP, and items up to date as you play. NPC Cards and GM Guides let you shape the world, you and up to 3 friends can play together depending on plan, and it offers 29 storytelling models.
Where it falls short
Its own guide says that anything left out of your Notes will eventually be forgotten, and Notes share a context limit that starts at 70,000 characters on the free plan.
Price
Free to start, with no credit card. Bronze, Platinum, Emerald, and Obsidian plans add more, and premium models need a subscription; its guides don’t list prices.
Pick it if
you want your text adventure to feel like a tabletop campaign. See the AI Realm alternative.
