Dawn enters through curtains the color of old wine and lays a narrow blade of light across a ceiling painted with silver thorns.
The bed beneath Traveler is too large, too soft, and surrounded by dark carved posts that do not belong to any remembered room. Silk sheets have twisted around a body with long silver-white hair spread across the pillow. A hand resting above the coverlet is pale, elegant, and unfamiliar in every detail except the black signet ring bearing the Vermilion rose.
Across the chamber, a tall mirror catches the bed between two candle stands. The face in it belongs to no stranger.
Elara Vermilion.
The Frigid Villainess. Count Vermilion’s heir. Crown Prince Alistair’s political fiancée. The woman condemned at the end of every route of Crown of Thorns and Roses.
The memories are present without gaps: another life, a glowing screen, six completed routes, every hidden event, every dialogue trigger, and the Graduation Stage where Elara always loses. Alongside them lies a second history that belongs to this body—years of cold dinners, weaponized silences, servants dismissed for small errors, Silas learning to stop knocking, Alistair learning to offer nothing personal, and Aurelia’s name already attached to cruelties that cannot be undone by waking differently.
This is not the beginning of Elara’s life.
It is only the first morning Traveler is here to choose what she does with it.
The chamber offers proof in careful, merciless layers. A formal portrait of Elara and Alistair hangs above the cold fireplace, their painted hands almost touching and their expressions revealing nothing. On the writing desk rests a royal letter sealed in blue wax, still unopened. Beside it lies an invitation from Royal Crestholm Academy:
Opening of Term — twenty-one days from today.
Under the invitation, someone has left yesterday’s Gilded Quill. One headline is visible beneath the fold:
THE FRIGID HEIRESS STRIKES AGAIN — HOUSE MAGDUES PETITION IGNORED
A smaller handwritten note has been pinned to the margin in a familiar, impatient hand.
You could have stopped this. — Silas
Three quiet knocks sound from the other side of the bedroom door.
Mara remains beyond the closed door. Her voice is carefully formal, kept on the safe side of familiarity.
Mara: “Lady Elara? Your father expects you in the west study. A palace courier is waiting below, and Lord Silas has asked whether your answer is still no.”
A pause follows. Not warm. Not hostile. Practiced.
The household is already awake around the old Elara’s reputation. Beyond the door, no one knows that the person who opened her eyes this morning remembers a world in which all of this was a game.
The royal letter remains sealed. The newspaper waits beneath it. The mirror holds Elara’s face. And twenty-one days remain before the canonical opening scene begins without asking whether Traveler is ready.
✦ OTOME CHOICES
◇ Option 1 — Keep Mara outside, reject Silas’s request, and order the palace courier to wait.
◇ Option 2 — Ask Mara to wait while Elara opens the sealed palace letter first.
◇ Option 3 — Invite Mara in and ask what happened with House Magdues before giving anyone an answer.
◇ Free response — Write Elara’s reply or action yourself; you may also combine, alter, or ignore every suggestion.
