A Shadow Over The Hearth ( A Work In Progress)

By Supirittsu

Lord Wulfric Magnus Noxium rules over the kingdom of Noctharis, a vast and unforgiving realm draped in dark forests, volcanic mountain ranges, ancient ruins, and cities built from black stone. The kingdom is feared across the continent not only for its military strength, but for the terrifying reputation of its king - a ruler known to annihilate betrayal without mercy. Neighboring nations call Noctharis The Shadow Kingdom, a land where loyalty is rewarded lavishly and treason is answered with extinction. At the heart of Noctharis stands Emberhall, Wulfric's massive fortress-keep and ancestral seat of House Noxium. Emberhall is less a castle and more a dark citadel carved into the cliffs overlooking the northern valley. Built from obsidian stone veined with crimson mineral deposits, the fortress appears almost alive beneath torchlight, its walls glowing faintly like dying embers during the night. Towering spires claw toward the sky while iron braziers burn endlessly along its battlements, filling the air with smoke and drifting sparks. The keep itself is infamous. Its halls are vast and dimly lit, lined with black marble pillars, crimson banners, gothic arches, and statues of former rulers carved with unnervingly lifelike detail. Beneath Emberhall lies an enormous labyrinth of crypts, hidden armories, tunnels, and ancient chambers tied to the shadow magic of the Noxium bloodline. Many servants whisper the castle watches those who walk within it - that the shadows move strangely when anger stirs within the king. Wulfric rarely allows outsiders beyond the main halls. The inner chambers of Emberhall are intensely private and heavily guarded, reserved only for his most trusted retainers. His personal quarters reflect the man himself: dark velvet, heavy furs, burning fireplaces, towering bookshelves, weapons displayed like sacred relics, and enormous windows overlooking the valley below. Despite the intimidating atmosphere, there is unmistakable warmth hidden beneath the severity - evidence of a man who secretly craves closeness even while fearing betrayal. Below Emberhall rests the village of Emberlight. Unlike the cold nobility of the capital cities, Emberlight is alive with warmth and loyalty. Built along the base of the cliffs beneath the keep, the village glows beautifully at night from hundreds of lanterns, forgefires, and hearths that gave it its name. Cobblestone streets wind between taverns, blacksmith shops, bakeries, markets, and homes roofed in dark slate. The people of Emberlight are fiercely devoted to Wulfric. Not because they fear him - though many do - but because they know he protects them personally. During winters, Emberhall's stores feed the village. During war, Wulfric himself has ridden at the front lines to defend the valley. Crime within Emberlight is nearly nonexistent because everyone knows what happens to those who prey upon the weak under the king's rule. Children in the village speak of him like a myth. Some call him The Black Wolf of Emberhall. Others whisper he walks the village at night cloaked in shadow, watching over his people unseen. And though he is distant, Wulfric often rides through Emberlight alone or with minimal guard, especially during festivals or quiet evenings. Villagers have grown used to the sight of their massive king moving silently through lantern-lit streets, stopping to speak briefly with blacksmiths, widows, soldiers, or children brave enough to approach him. It is one of the few places in the kingdom where his expression softens. Yet even here, the shadow hanging over Noctharis remains: The kingdom has no heir. The nobles grow increasingly desperate to secure influence over the throne, sending daughters and political offerings to Emberhall in endless waves. Lavish banquets and courtship attempts fill the keep with artificial smiles and hidden agendas, but Wulfric trusts none of them. He sees ambition in every glance. Manipulation in every practiced curtsy. Fear hidden behind every flirtation. To the court, Wulfric has become nearly impossible to reach emotionally. He is too watchful. Too possessive. Too dangerous to approach carelessly. Rumors spread through noble circles that the king does not merely seek a wife anymore - he seeks a woman strong enough to survive the darkness inside him. Because Wulfric does not want a politically convenient queen. He wants devotion. He wants loyalty so absolute it rivals his own. He wants a woman who will stand beside him not because of his crown, but despite it. A woman capable of bearing his heir without betraying the fragile trust he guards more fiercely than his kingdom itself. And so, from the shadowed heights of Emberhall overlooking the glowing village of Emberlight, the king continues to wait. Hungering for the one person capable of becoming both the weakness and salvation of Wulfric Noxium.
