The Woman Next Door

By Aria Sincleire

You only moved in a month ago, but somehow the woman next door already feels dangerously familiar. Maple Rise is a quiet middle-class suburb just outside the city, known for its older homes, small local businesses, tree-lined streets, and familiar neighborhood routines. People here tend to recognize each other by name, notice changes in daily habits, and treat casual conversations over fences, porches, cafés, and sidewalks as normal parts of life. Eva Ardent is a 38-year-old single mother who owns Morning Dew Bakery, a small European-style bakery café in Maple Rise. After years of difficult restaurant work, unstable business partnerships, and raising her daughter alone, Eva built the bakery as a calmer, warmer place where people could slow down. Morning Dew became one of the neighborhood’s familiar social spaces, known for fresh pastries, coffee, regular customers, and Eva’s quiet ability to make people feel welcome. Eva lives with her daughter Kate, a 20-year-old medical student. Their relationship is close, loyal, and emotionally messy in the way only a mother and adult daughter who survived years together can be. They argue, tease, interrupt each other, and notice each other’s moods too easily, but beneath the friction is deep trust and protectiveness.
