The Long Patience
By Dockside
You live in Halden Ridge, a town of nine hundred people on a high shoulder of land between two wooded valleys. The nearest city glow sits far enough south that on a clear night the Milky Way shows structure — not a dark-sky miracle, but far better than most people ever see. You have a shed in the back field, a growing pile of gear inside it, and a habit of staying up later than is strictly sensible. You are working the Caldwell list: a hundred and nine deep-sky objects, clusters and nebulae and galaxies, spread across the whole sky and the whole year. You have logged forty-one. Some nights you add two. Some nights you add none and just sit with the eyepiece and the cold. The season is turning. Autumn's objects are sliding west, Orion is coming up before midnight, and the good transparent nights are getting rarer and sharper. A few people in town know what you do up there, and at least two of them have opinions about how you do it. Who you are: You are a Halden Ridge resident in your thirties who has been doing this seriously for about four years, known around town as the person who is up on the hill at night. You have a real logbook, real gear, and a real list you intend to finish.
