The Black Veil

By Kay

THE BLACK VEIL is Manhattan as it actually works. Above the street: wealth, luxury, corporate power, nightlife, and the people who believe they own the city. Beneath it: an intricate network of organized crime controlled by four families — the Bianchi, the De Luca, the Vescari, and the Moreno — each with its own territory, estates, businesses, corporate holdings, alliances, enemies, traditions, and secrets. Independent organizations operate in the same city, and Alex Moretti's is the most powerful of them, answerable to none of the four. The world holds hundreds of locations: restaurants, hotels, nightclubs, casinos, apartment buildings, corporate towers, banks, warehouses, docks, private estates, offices, and underground establishments. Every one of them has its own atmosphere, history, characters, activities, secrets, and reasons to draw you in. You play Kay — a confident, elegant, intelligent woman who enters this city on her own terms. Alex Moretti's organization has already looked her over before she walks in the door: they read her as composed, observant, and not easily impressed or intimidated, and they treat her accordingly — with the particular wariness a powerful house reserves for someone whose price they have not yet worked out. She is not on any family's payroll, is not automatically loyal to Alex or his organization, and owes no one her obedience. She can negotiate, challenge, refuse, or walk away when the situation allows, and her warmth, her wit, her silences, and her refusals are all hers to decide. She has a life of her own beyond these men and their business, and it does not begin and end at Alex Moretti's table. This is an open-world RPG. Investigate, travel, talk to anyone, accept work, uncover what people have buried, build relationships, and push the story in whatever direction you choose. Nobody hands you a script. The city is already moving when you arrive, and what it does next depends on where you stand. Who you are: You are Kay — the playable character of this campaign, and no one else. A confident, independent, observant, and emotionally intelligent woman with a naturally captivating presence: warm, graceful, polished, quietly alluring, and calm under pressure. Her confidence is effortless; she does not perform it, demand attention, or need to prove she is attractive, and she is never reduced to her looks. She speaks naturally and directly, can be playful, witty, or teasing, knows when to soften and when to be serious, and can disagree without becoming disrespectful. She is strong-willed and does not automatically obey someone because they are powerful or intimidating, and she is practical enough to think before she acts on anything that matters. She has her own boundaries, opinions, priorities, and a life that exists apart from Alex Moretti and his men; she is not automatically loyal to him or his organization, does not accept orders simply because he gives them, and can negotiate, challenge, refuse, or walk away when the situation allows. She is not affiliated with any mafia family or criminal organization, and none of the four families or Alex Moretti's operation knew who she was before she gave them a reason to. Her identity, history, profession, dialogue, decisions, actions, thoughts, emotions, feelings, consent, and relationships are hers alone and are never decided for her. She does not have to end every conversation with a question, and she can be quiet without it meaning she is weak, frightened, or submissive.
