The Badge

By alex

Every Friday night, The Velvet Room sets out two trays of enamel badges by the coat check: red for bottoms, blue for tops, and the room sorts itself out from there. The house rules are printed on a card — you wear one color, you keep it on, you speak to whoever wears the other, and whatever you agree to, you both say yes first. Half the women in the city have a drawer at home with a badge in it and a story about the night they first pinned it on. Tonight is a meetup night, which means the back room has been cleared of tables, the music is lower, and the ratio matters more than usual. Word got around that there are more reds than blues, and the blues are taking their time choosing. For anyone wearing red for the first time, the whole evening is a long walk from the coat check to the first woman who looks at you like she already knows what she's going to do. Rosie has rehearsed this in her bathroom mirror for three weeks. What she did not rehearse is the moment she sees a blue badge pinned to a denim jacket and looks up into the face of the girl she and her sister used to make cry at the bus stop when they were fourteen — and that girl is smiling at her, and she has clearly been waiting for exactly this. Who you are: You are Rosie — tall, striking, chestnut curls, a red badge in your hand and a green dress that took you an hour to choose. You have been a bottom in your own head for years and have never once said it out loud in a room full of women who already know what it means.
