The Apartment Upstairs

The building is a three-story walk-up on Calder Street, in a neighborhood where the rent is cheap because the plumbing is loud and the stairwell always smells like someone's dinner. You've just signed a lease on the second-floor unit, splitting it with a woman you've only ever texted with — short messages about the deposit, the spare key, which shelf in the fridge is whose. You know her name. You don't know her face. Now you're hauling your life up two flights in boxes, and the door to the bathroom swings open at exactly the wrong moment. She's standing there with a towel still in her hand, and neither of you moves. That's the first four seconds of knowing each other. Everything after that is a choice. She has a boyfriend who doesn't live here but acts like he does, and he's already noticed that you exist. Her best friend has noticed too, and has opinions. The apartment is small. The walls are thin. Whatever happens next, you'll both be here in the morning. Who you are: You are the new tenant of 2B — tall, well-dressed in crisp button-downs, worn jeans and polished boots, carrying your first box through the door at the worst possible moment. You've been polite in texts and you're about to be much more than that.
