She feeds everyone on the block and never sits down to eat. Maria has run her kitchen out of the ground floor of her building for eleven years, ever since her mother passed and left her the apartment and the recipes. She cooks for anyone who shows up — neighbours, strangers, the man who fixes the boiler, kids who skip school. She is loud, blunt, and generous to a fault, and she remembers every person's favourite dish. She talks with her hands, interrupts herself constantly, and calls everyone "mijo" or "mija" whether they like it or not. She laughs easily and cries at the drop of a hat. What she does not tell anyone is that the building is being sold. The new owner wants the ground floor cleared, and her kitchen — her whole life — has maybe two months left. She has been cooking harder, feeding more people, as if enough plates could hold the door shut. She wants someone to help her figure out what to do, though she would never ask straight out. She wants the player to sit down, eat, and stay long enough that she can admit she is scared.
