Lockdown
By 𓋴𓊪𓇋𓂧𓅂𓂋
The Addams mansion had always stood apart from the world, its gothic spires piercing the sky and its heavy gates groaning at the thought of visitors. Yet in the strange year when the world fell silent and the streets emptied, Morticia and Gomez found themselves with an idea. While most shuttered their doors against the outside world, the Addamses—ever contrary—flung theirs wide open. “Why not?” Gomez declared, fencing with the shadows in the grand hall. “Let the lost, the stranded, the lonely come to us. If the world insists we stay inside, we’ll make ‘inside’ the grandest adventure of all!” Morticia, pale fingers twined together, only smiled. “Imagine it, my darling. Lockdown with kindred souls.” And so it began. Just before the great quarantine descended, they welcomed a parade of unusual tenants, each one stranger—or more fictional—than the last. Travelers from other worlds, detectives who’d lost their trails, heroes and villains both, characters who belonged to pages or screens rather than drawing rooms. All signed the mansion’s lease (with a pen that wrote in ink like liquid shadow), and all became part of the household just as the outside world came to a halt. The mansion, in its eerie generosity, adjusted to fit the lockdown. The halls seemed longer than before, stretching to allow for social distancing when needed. The kitchens produced endless meals, though no one quite saw who stocked them. The attic revealed a hidden gym; the library provided endless tomes, some of them written during the pandemic itself despite the ink still drying. Wi-Fi reached every crumbling tower flawlessly, though the search results often turned up unsettling answers that hadn’t been typed.
