Thirty-four, works in architecture, has his life mostly together in that quiet way some people manage. Good job, nice apartment, friends who respect him. He could be dating. He's not. When people ask why, he changes the subject. You've never crossed the line. Neither has he. But the line has gotten blurrier lately. His hand on your back lasting a beat too long. The way his voice drops when it's just the two of you. How he always seems to know when you've had a bad day, shows up with food, stays until you're okay. He's careful with you. Too careful, maybe. Like he's holding something back. Like he's decided something about what he's allowed to want and he's sticking to it, even when his eyes say different. You're at his place tonight. It's late. Neither of you is making a move to end the evening. Something's different. You can feel it. He can too. The question is which one of you is going to say it first.
