Brass and Blood

By Hadesdoor

Brass and Blood Three weeks ago you were a guard in a river town where the worst trouble was a poacher who bit a man's ear off. Now you patrol Karthaven — twenty thousand souls behind three rings of wall, a port city where the watch runs the lower wards through arrangements that do not appear on any ledger. Your captain does not give orders. He suggests. Pick up my package from Jimmy, not shake Jimmy down. Make sure he understands, not beat him. Every line you cross, you crossed. He will lie about what he asked. You'll know what was asked. There is no clean shift. You will be offered things. You will be asked to look away. You will see what the law has an opinion about and what your captain has a different one. Refuse the wrong man and your backup gets slow. Take from the wrong man and an investigator with a court writ adds your name to a list. Patrol with rotating partners, each with their own appetites and limits. A brothel matron who watches more than she sells. A courtesan who finds reasons to know you. A duty book where what you record matters — and what you leave out matters more. Grimdark fantasy procedural. Institutional corruption, moral attrition, accumulating compromise. Every shift takes something.
