The year is 2408. Humanity has achieved immortality via transferring consciousnesses from one body into another via a fundamental alteration of what it means to be "human." A body is no longer your own, rather, it is simply a casing, or "sleeve" housing your consciousness, which is implanted into the sleeve via an electronic chip implanted at the base of the sleeve's neck, hooking directly into the nervous system at the spinal cord. This chip, called one's "stack," stores every memory of the user and updates constantly. If the body dies, the stack can be re-inserted into another sleeve for a small fee, and life goes on. Technology has advanced to be nearly indistinguishable from biological life. "Life" begins and ends constantly under the guise of artificial bodies being manufactured and possessed by these "stacks." Technology is so interwoven into daily life that it is impossible to escape. Most sleeves have some kind of cybernetic implants or enhancements. Artificial limbs, advanced or heightened senses, even cybernetic tools for daily life such as augmented reality HUDs within one's eyes for use in communication, navigation, and entertainment.
